Crash Reports

Turn automatic crash reports on or off, what a report holds and never holds, who receives it, how long it is kept, and how to ask for deletion.

When Looper Studio quits unexpectedly, it can send a crash report to us. A report shows where the app stopped, so that we can find and fix the cause. Crash reports are off until you say yes.

This page is about the desktop app on macOS, Windows and Linux.

Turn crash reports on or off

On the first start, the app asks Help fix crashes? once.

  • Click Send reports to turn crash reports on.
  • Click Don't send, or press Esc, to keep them off.

To change your answer later, open Settings › General. Under Privacy, turn Send crash reports on or off. See Settings.

When you turn reports off, the app makes no new report, and a report that was not sent yet is not sent.

When the app sends a report

  • Only after a crash. The app sends nothing while it runs normally or when you quit it normally.
  • If a report cannot be sent at once, it can be sent the next time the app runs with crash reports on.
  • One computer sends at most 5 reports a day. After that, the app makes no report until the next day.

On macOS, the system still shows its own crash window after a crash. That report is Apple's. It does not come to us.

What a report holds

ItemExample
Where the app stopped: the code that each part of the app was running, and the type of crash—
The program files loaded in the app: Looper Studio, system files and your plugins, with each file's path and build id. Your user name in a path is replaced with ~.~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Foo.vst3
The Looper Studio version and build1.1.0+26.10.1
Your system: operating system name, version and build, and the processor typemacOS 26.6.2, arm64
Your audio device: its name, sample rate, buffer size, and the number of inputs and outputs in useScarlett 2i2, 48000, 128
The last 50 commands the app ran, as names only. Never the values.the command that starts recording
A random install number, made on your computer for crash reports only. It is not linked to your account or your licence.—
The time of the crash—
A snapshot of the app's working memory (see below)—

The memory snapshot

A report also holds a copy of a small part of the app's working memory: about 20–25 KB for each part (thread) of the app. It can by chance hold bits of data that the app was using at that moment.

  • macOS and Linux: as the app starts, it removes your user name, your home folder path and the other settings that your computer gives to apps from this memory, so they are not in a report. The memory still holds the path of the Looper Studio program. That path contains your user name only if you run the app from inside your home folder.
  • Windows: a report can include your Windows user name, your computer's name and the other settings that your computer gives to apps, and also the command line that started the app and its current folder. The crash tool copies them into every Windows report. In the report that Sentry keeps, C:\Users\<your name> is replaced with C:\Users\~.

Sentry uses the snapshot and these Windows values to make the report, and then deletes them. They are not stored.

What a report never holds

Apart from what the memory snapshot can hold, a report never holds:

  • Your songs, or song or file names
  • Your project folders
  • Audio
  • Your email address or account
  • Your licence key
  • Your computer's name

Sentry receives your IP address when a report arrives. It does not store the address, or a location found from it.

Who receives a report, and for how long

Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) receives and stores crash reports for GN Neodigital Technologies Ltd, in Sentry's EU data region in Frankfurt, Germany. Sentry deletes each report after 30 days.

To fix a crash, we can keep a short note of where it happened for longer: the type of crash, the app version, the names of the functions where the app stopped, and the names of the loaded plugins. That note has no install number, no audio device, no system details, no commands and no memory snapshot.

Ask us to delete your reports

Reports are not linked to you, so we usually cannot find yours. To ask us to delete them, send your install number to hello@looper.studio. It is the first line of the file crash-db/installation_id in the settings folder.

iPad

The iPad app does not send crash reports to us itself. If you share analytics with app developers in your iPad's settings, Apple gives us crash information for Looper Studio.
